3 Things to do in Hokitika

Hokitika is a small town on the west coast of New Zealand. Although it may be small, there are plenty of things to explore here!

How to Get to Hokitika

Hokitika lies near the western entrance of Arthur's Pass which crosses the country to Christchurch. It is approximately 1h 45m north of Franz Josef on State Highway 6.

Where to Stay in Hokitika

It was here that we found probably the greatest campsite of our entire South Island roadtrip: Links View Holiday Park. I simply cannot recommend this place enough. Newly renovated facilities offering a comfy lounge/dining space, a full kitchen, hot showers and clean bathrooms, laundry, free wifi... the list goes on. For just $17 per person in an unpowered site / $20 for powered, you really can't go wrong!

Things to do in Hokitika

Hokitika Gorge

The most famous attraction of the region is about 30km outside of town at the beautiful Hokitika Gorge. A brisk 15-minute walk will take you past a couple view points to the swinging bridge and on to the rocks at the base of the gorge. On a sunny day, the water here is supposed to be a clear, shimmery turquoise (we came after a day of massive thunderstorms...)!

Glow Worm Dell

After the sun has gone down, head to the little dell just off the main road where the whole forest seems to come to life with sparkling glow worms! They are not visible in daylight.

Hokitika Beach

Visit the windy and beautiful Hokitika Beach. Snap a shot of the famous driftwood signage while you're there!
