- How do you afford to travel so much?
I've grown up travelling and would much rather spend my money on that than on anything else! Half of each pay check goes into my savings account, I shop at thrift stores and value experiences over materialistic objects.
I worked during uni and full-time after graduation to save up for travel, taking my vacation days to go on shorter trips. In December 2018 I quit my job before embarking on my current backpacking trip where I am travelling on a working holiday visa. I also offer social media management and website development on the side.
- What camera do you use to take all your photos?
95% of the photos on this blog were taken with my Canon Elph 330 HS PowerShot (which I upgraded to the 360 model in June 2019), a tiny point and shoot that impresses me every time. It's tiny, so it fits in my pocket or hand bag, unlike a bulky DSLR!
- Did you go to university?
Yes, I graduated with a BA in 2016 from the University of British Columbia in Canada.
- Who takes your photos?
Many of my solo travel shots are with a self-timer or I will ask others around me to take a picture. TIP: when asking someone to take a photo of you, choose the people with professional cameras in hand as they tend to have more of an idea about how to frame a nice shot than those with just a smart phone. Don't be afraid to tell them what angle you want and encourage them to take multiple photos!
- How long have you been blogging?
JanaMeerman.com was born in April 2014 just before my 4-month summer trip to Europe. I back-dated a couple of my blog posts from before that time because they're an important part of my travels.
- How do you edit your photos?
All the photos on my Instagram and on my blog are edited with Lightroom.
- Where are you from?
Technically, I'm British-Canadian. Actually, I am half-German, half-Dutch, but was born in the UK where I lived for 8 years. I spent 2 years living in the USA as well before 12 years in Canada. I am currently backpacking the world and am now based out of New Zealand! (So to answer your question: everywhere?)
- What's your favourite country you've visited so far?
It's hard to compare where I've been since everywhere is so different. Usually, my favourite country is the one I am exploring at that moment as I like to live in the moment and enjoy the experiences and opportunities that come my way. I do have soft spots for New Zealand and Canada; they're naturally gorgeous places.
- Can you make me an awesome website too?
Yes, I can! (For any topic, not just travel). Get in touch with me over on my collaboration page.
- I own a hostel / restaurant / tour company / hotel / brand / clothing line / anything else super cool; can you promote it?
Get in touch with me from my collaboration page and let's get talking.
- You still didn't answer my question...
I love hearing from readers with any questions or comments they have about anything travel-related or stuff I get up to. Head over to my contact page and I look forward to hearing from you!
