I was born in Europe, lived here for eight years in my childhood, came back to visit many times while growing up in North America, and eventually moved back in 2020, living first in Belgium and then Austria.
All this to say, I've been lucky enough to have traveled Europe fairly extensively. It will never be enough and there is ALWAYS more to see in Europe, but I do like to think I've sampled quite a lot of what this continent has to offer.

Europe is made up of 45 countries. I have an additional 23 European territories in my list of places I want to visit.
→ Check out how many countries and territories I count in the world!
This list gets updated as I visit more small countries in Europe; this post was last updated 23 August 2025.
When you Google "what are the ten smallest countries in Europe?" every website will give you a different answer based on different data. Everyone agrees that the Vatican City is the world's smallest country but as you get larger, it begins to differ. Some lists include Cyprus, but others consider Cyprus part of Asia, so Kosovo, Montenegro or Slovenia might fill in the gaps.
Additionally, there are a number of European territories that can be included; and everyone has a different idea of how many of those there are, too. So, naturally, after scouring the web and coming up inconclusive, I decided to make my own list.
The criteria for my list:
- I included the ten smallest countries in Europe (of the 45) according to square kilometre.
- However, I've also included every territory as a bonus item if it is smaller than these ten countries. My list includes 22 territories in Europe of which 15 are smaller than the ten smallest countries!
- When measuring sizes, I counted only the metropolitan country and none of its territories as I count those separately.
- For example: the size of Cyprus on my list is just the Republic of Cyprus; not including the disputed territory of Northern Cyprus or the United Kingdom's territories of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
- For example: the size of Portugal on my list is just mainland Portugal; not including the island territories of the Azores or Madeira.
