Mont Dore Hike

Mont Dore is a beautiful mountain hike just southeast of Nouméa, the main town and capital of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. It's a great chance to get out of the city and see incredible views - think bright blue ocean with gorgeous little islands dotted around, copper red earth beneath your feet and plenty of lush vegetation, all backed by the most breathtaking panoramic mountain ranges stretching far off in the distance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hike and really recommend it to anyone visiting Nouméa plus, you can access it by bus straight from town making it easy for visitors!

MONT DORE HIKE DETAILS

When: year-round

Where: southeast of Nouméa

Difficulty: intermediate; majority of trail is stairs

Length: the well-maintained path of stairs is a 7.8km roundtrip trek which took us 1 1/2 hour each way

Directions: from Ninette bus stop, walk up the road and then take the last right turn to the start of the trail and then follow the red dirt path along stairs and metal trails to the clearly marked summit.

Bathrooms: no

Public Transit: from Nouméa take the D bus from Desmazures to Ninette (leaves approx. every 1/2 hour) for 280 XPF per person.
