Gerrin Point Lookout Hike in Bouddi National Park, Australia

The Gerrin Point Lookout is on the Bouddi Coastal Walk, a gorgeous hiking trail in Bouddi National Park just south of the Central Coast. Bouddi National Park is just south of the Central Coast, stretching 3,790 acres, part of which reaches into the Tasman Sea with the park covering land, shore and marine areas.

We're currently living full-time in our campervan, a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter, and exploring Australia, with a plan of "driving the lap" (completing the entire perimeter of the country). I first visited Australia in 2019, following the classic backpacker route, mostly visiting big cities, staying in hostels and traveling by public transport. This time, with the freedom of our campervan, we're trying to hit the lesser known spots and go slower.

For over 10,000 years, the Darkinjung people have lived on this land.

The word Bouddi is an Aboriginal word for "the heart". The area has been a natural park since 1936 and became a national park in 1967 under the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

How to Get to Bouddi National Park

The Gerrin Point Lookout is located on the Bouddi Coastal Walk, part of Bouddi National Park. The coastal walk begins at Putty Beach.

By car: The best way to reach Bouddi National Park is with your own wheels. It's about a 45-minute drive south of Central Coast. There is a parking lot at Putty Beach and overflow parking along Putty Beach Road. To access Bouddi National Park and the Coastal Walk, there is an AUD $8 fee per vehicle, payable at ticket machines in the parking lot.

By public transport: It is possible to reach Bouddi National Park by public transport but it can be a long trip. Trains run between Sydney and Newcastle on the Central Coast line; get off at Woy Woy and transfer to bus 59 to Killcare. From Killcare bus station, it's a 25-minute walk down Putty Beach Road to reach the start of the Bouddi Coastal Walk.

By guided tour: Bells at Killcare offers an incredible four-day guided trek through Bouddi National Park.

Where to Eat in Woy Woy

Before you reach Bouddi National Park, you'll may drive through Woy Woy or you'll get off the train here to transfer to your bus.

I can recommend stopping in Woy Woy before or after your hike on the Bouddi Coastal Walk for a delicious lunch at One Lucky Duck Cafe, an adorable cafe with a plant-filled courtyard. We loved their soup and their cakes to fuel us up before our walk.

Gerrin Point Lookout Hike Details

When: year-round; in winter (May-July) you might even spot migrating humpback whales

Where: the start of this hike begins at Putty Beach in Bouddi National Park

Difficulty: easy

Length: from Putty Beach, we hiked a 3.4km return trail to Gerrin Point Lookout which took us about an hour. The entire Bouddi Coastal Walk stretches 8.5km each way from Putty Beach to MacMasters Beach; hiking to the Gerrin Point Lookout is a great shorter alternative to doing the full trek.

Directions: from the Putty Beach parking lot, head out onto the beach and turn left to walk across the sand to the wooden steps that are the start of the Bouddi Coastal Walk. From here, the trail is well-marked with a mix of concrete and wooden boardwalk.
