Valletta is the capital of Malta, a bustling ancient walled city on the north side of Malta, situated on a promontory jutting out into the sea. Sliema lies to the west and is the quieter, less touristy of the two, typically the more popular choice to stay in of the two.
The entire city of Valletta is quite spectacularly a UNESCO world heritage site, having been so since 1980, and is one of the world's smallest capital cities with a population of less than 7000. Established in the 1500s, Valletta shows signs of the various countries that once lay claim to this island nation, and now boasts opulent streets and panoramic views around the harbour, across to the other cities, and out into the ocean.
Buses run frequently from all around the country to Valletta, as the main hub of the island. The popular ferry from Sliema to Valletta runs every half hour and is the preferred way for people to get between the two neighbouring cities.
I spent a hot afternoon wandering the streets, looking for the best views the city had to offer. Here's what I found:
