Visiting the Devil’s Bridge in Gablenz, Germany

I remember seeing a photo of the perfectly round Devil's Bridge on Tumblr more than a decade ago and it stayed lodged in my memory ever since as a place I just knew I wanted to see in real life one day.

The Easter long weekend is always a perfect time to head out on a trip, what with shoulder season in full swing, the spring weather looking better and prices still reasonable. In previous years, I've spent my Easters in Northern IrelandIbiza (Spain), New ZealandCalgary (Canada) and hiking in Vancouver (Canada), among other trips.

I have a German mother so I have visited many parts of Germany many, many times as a child. I currently live in Salzburg in Austria and so this Easter was the perfect excuse to re-explore northern Germany and many of the places of my childhood - plus a few other stops along the way.

Our first stop was actually in neighbouring Czechia, where we spent a night exploring the colourful spa town of Karlovy Vary. From there, it was time to kick off the German leg of our trip and we crossed the border again and headed towards Dresden. Then, it was time to see some bridges; we drove first down to the Basteibrücke where a wooden bridge passes through million-year-old rock formations over the River Elbe.

Then, we headed east, almost to the border with Poland, to visit the famous Devil's Bridge.

How to Get to the Devil's Bridge

By flight: The closest airport to the Devil's Bridge is in Dresden. From there it is an hour-and-a-half drive.

→ Check out my complete guide to visiting Dresden!

By car: We drove to the Devil's Bridge after visiting the Basteibrücke which took us an hour and a half. From Dresden, you can reach the Devil's Bridge in the same amount of time. You can park just across the road from the Rhododendron Park, in which the bridge is located.

→ If you don't have your own car, you can rent one in Dresden.

By train and bus: You can technically get to the Devil's Bridge using public transport but it will take quite a lot of time and a number of transfers. You can check the latest routes on Google Maps.

How to Visit the Devil's Bridge

From the parking lot, it is just a few minutes' walk through Rhododendron Park to see the famous Devil's Bridge. There is one main viewpoint from where you'll get the iconic shot but you can also choose to complete the whole walk around the lake, which is about 1km, and see the bridge from all angles.

Walking on the bridge is not permitted.

Visiting the Ścieżka geoturystyczna in Poland

We thought, since we were just a ten-minute drive from the Polish border, that it'd be fun to cross over and step foot in another country for the year. And so, we spent a short afternoon walk visiting the gorgeous blue lakes at Ścieżka geoturystyczna.

Unfortunately, my camera was on a weird setting and the photos came out somewhat blurry... but they're a fun memory nonetheless.
