With a very odd June weather forecast behind us, much of it grey and rainy with bursts of hot sunshine in between, it was imperative that we take advantage of the few good days by being outdoors and enjoying all that Austria has to offer.
On one such day, when the skies were clear and the thermotsat reached 33ºC, I decided it would be the perfect opportunity to visit a new lake on my list. And so, a day trip to the beautiful Bürgerausee in Kuchl was concocted.

How to Get to Bürgerausee
I visited Bürgerausee by bike from my home in Salzburg. I had a craving to go on a long bike ride and so, with new biker shorts on to make me feel the part, I rode just over an hour south of Salzburg to Kuchl all the way along the Salzach River. Bürgerausee is 25km away from Salzburg on the bike and it was a seriously stunning ride past incredible mountain views. Check out my exact Strava route here.
Alternatively, you can drive in about 25 minutes or, easiest of all, hop on the S-Bahn direct from Salzburg and get off at Kuchl; the lake is just a short walk away.
How to Spend a Day at Bürgerausee
Bürgerausee is the perfect lake for a day out. You can swim in the clear turquoise waters and jump off of the many floating docks. A lakeside food stand serves up tons of drinks and meals to keep you going. There are clean, free toilets on site and also a free cold water refill station. A playground for kids and beach volleyball courts seal the deal.
