Visiting Kufstein Fortress

While living in Salzburg for more than three years now, I've been making it my mission to explore as much of Europe as I can. This includes both far-flung adventures to countries across the continent, but it also means a lot of time exploring the immediate regions around me in Austria, my home, and southern Germany. My favourite way to spend a day off is always to discover something new - this desire is what has fuelled all the content for my blog for more than a decade now.

So, a cold Saturday in December rolled around and I pulled up my Google Maps with its thousands of pins of things I want to see around the world and had a little look through some cool things to see within driving distance of my little mountain flat in Salzburg. The weather was perfect, with fresh snow lying under a brilliantly blue sky.

And so it was that we spent a day driving through the gorgeous roads of Tyrol towards Kufstein where we visited the fortress for a beautiful panoramic viewpoint overlooking the city.

How to Get to Kufstein

By car: The easiest way to visit Kufstein is with your own wheels. We drove through the snowy landscapes of Tyrol from Salzburg to visit Kufstein on our way to Innsbruck. In Kufstein, we parked in the Zentrumsgarage, a five-minute walk from the entrance to the Kufstein Fortress, which is behind St. Vitus parish church.

If you don't have your own car, you can rent one in Salzburg.

By flight: Kufstein is situated about halfway between Salzburg and Innsbruck, two of the biggest cities in Austria, in both of which you'll find international airports.

By train: You can easily reach Kufstein by ÖBB train, connecting directly from both Salzburg and Innsbruck as well as Munich across the border in Germany.

How to Visit Kufstein Fortress

Kufstein Fortress is the pinnacle of the town, sitting high above the rest of the buildings, overlooking the Inn River, a tributary of the Danube.

Mentioned for the first time in 1205 as Castrum Caofstein, this impressive fortress was then in posession of Duke Ludwig of Bavaria. It was a key point in a battle in 1336 between Bavaria and Tyrol, blocking Charles of Moravia from reaching Bavaria. In 1342, Kufstein was gifted to Margarete, Duchess of Tyrol, as a wedding present from her husband Louis of Brandenburg, son of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria, marking the first time that Kufstein became part of Tyrol and no longer Bavaria. However, when Margarete gave Tyrol to the Habsburgs in 1363, Kufstein went back to the Bavarians. In 1504, Emperor Maximilian I took over following the Siege of Kufstein during yet another conflict between Bavaria and Tyrol. Kufstein was Bavarian until 1805, during which time it was used as a prison, often for Hungarians, before returning to Austria, and continued to be used as prison until the 19th century. Thanks to Wikipedia for the history lesson!

You can hike up to Kufstein Fortress from the gift shop or you can ride the short bahn up the hill, the price of which is included in your ticket.

You can visit Kufstein Fortress on your own or you can join a guided tour. You do not need to purchase tickets in advance, you can buy them in the gift shop when you arrive - and if you're lucky, you might spot the resident cat!

At Christmas time, a Christkindlmarkt can be explored within the castle grounds offering local gifts and foods to try. There are also plenty of other seasonal events taking place all year round at Kufstein.

Things to See Near Kufstein

As we left behind Kufstein, we stopped by the Achensee, the largest lake in Tyrol, and one I'd love to come back and spend more time at during the warmer months.

Check out all my favourite lakes near Salzburg!

We finished our day in Innsbruck where we visited the Christkindlmarkt and had yummy mocktails (to celebrate my five-year anniversary since I stopped drinking alcohol!) at Blaue Birgitte.
