Day Spa at Das Goldberg

Ever since our day spa experience in December last year at Das Edelweiss in the snowy mountains of Großarl, Austria, I was looking forward to our next chance to indulge.

We've spent the past few weekends skiing in Austria and after a week of being under the weather and nursing some sore muscles from a rough fall on the slopes on our latest day out, we figured the last weekend of January was the perfect moment to follow through with that plan. It took quite a while to find a good spa that was within driving distance for the early start that a day spa warrants, within a decent price range and also offered the amenities we were after for our self care day.

After far too much time searching on Google Maps, I finally came across Das Goldberg. We made some calls very late on Saturday evening and managed to nab the final spot for a day spa booking the following morning. Wellness hotels only give out a handful of day spa spots; priority of course goes to their overnight guests.

It was genuinely a perfect day. Austrians just have the spa culture nailed - think luxuriously designed spas, incorporating natural spaces both indoor and out, most often overlooking a snowy ski resort. Yup, relaxation perfection.

The Day Spa at Das Goldberg

As I live in Salzburg, we opted to book the Day Spa at Das Goldberg to spend a full day in their mountain wellness centre. We had access to over 1500m² of world-class, calming and beautifully designed wellness spaces from 8:00am to 7:30pm.

We arrived and parked our car in the outdoor parking lot and from the moment we stepped inside the lobby, we felt so at ease. Even though we weren't overnight guests, the level of service and attention was just the same. We checked in at the reception and were greeted warmly and our bags were taken while we had breakfast overlooking the town of Bad Hofgastein and the mountains rising behind it. The breakfast buffet offered a selection of yogurts, local cheeses, a juicer, plenty of drinks options, a made-to-order egg bar and a fresh bread station, including gluten-free and vegan options.

After breakfast, we collected our bags from reception and were provided with a canvas tote containing our fluffy bathrobes for our day in the spa. A member of staff carried this for us while he showed us the way down to the spa area and the changing rooms. While you need to bring your own swimwear for the outdoor area, the rest is provided by the hotel, including shampoo, body wash, towels and body lotion.

After donning our bathrobes, we had a big, empty day stretching out before us, just waiting for us to fill it with wellness indulgements. As we were some of the first guests into the spa and intent on making the most out of our day pass, we promptly undertook a complete tour of the space, visiting every room and sauna and snapping a few photos before other guests began to filter in.

The spa is spread across two floors. The lower floor has a few relaxation rooms, including the silent room which we chose for its extra special wooden cocoon-like bed in the far corner. It smelled like woody heaven. This floor also had a medium-heat sauna filled with large, heavy stone slabs, making the room feel like you were deep in a mine underground. A gorgeous yoga studio overlooking the mountains completed the first floor, as well as some outdoor seating options.

Upstairs, more relaxation rooms led to the large outdoor heated swimming pool with access from inside. Overlooking the ski slope, this infinity pool featured a glass wall on one-side. This floor also had the adults-only spaces, including an indoor sauna, an herbal sauna, an ice shower, a wet sauna, an outdoor panorama sauna and an outdoor cold pool and hot tub, plus plenty more cozy outdoor seating.

Unlimited infused water and tea is available all day, as well as sweet and savoury snacks between 1 and 6pm. An on-site massage centre offers beauty and body treatments including massages, facials, pedicures, manicures and hair and makeup services. These are an additional cost and must be booked in advance.

We loved our day at the Day Spa of Das Goldberg. The service was delightful and our day was peaceful and rejuvinating. We left after our ten hours of indulging feeling fully relaxed and ready for the week ahead.
