Hiking season has begun in Austria! Spring hiking is in full swing and that means while you might still find snow at the higher altitudes, the trails are starting to open and the mountains are ready for a new season of explorations.
We kicked off the hiking season with a trek up to the Schödersee, also in Hohe Tauern National Park, a few weeks ago. We loved the region so much that we wanted to visit some more lakes and so, after some research, found ourselves on way to Tauernmoossee.

The Tauernmoossee is actually a reservoir in the Stubach Valley, so has an impressive dam on one end of the lake. As it's still spring hiking season, there was snow on parts of the trail, but easily overcome with our good hiking boots (crampons not necessary). The sun was hot, there was still ice floating on the Tauernmoossee, the chair lift looked very abandoned and as if there hadn't been people inside in years and we saw not a single other person our on hike!
I can only imagine it gets even more beautiful as the snow melts and we want to come back to hike onwards to the Weißee.
When: May to October
Where: hike begins from the parking lot at Einzigerboden
Difficulty: intermediate
Length: from Einzigerboden, we did a loop hike also past the Grünsee of 11.65km which took us which took us three and a half hours of moving time, partially because there was still quite a lot of snow on the trail
Directions: starting from the parking lot at Einzigerboden, walk past the Materialsielbahn chairlift; do not cross the bridge past the Alpengasthof Paletti. It can be hard to locate the start of the trail; it's a grassy incline leading up to the left of the tunnel. Then, follow the red and white painted stripes and the yellow signs for Tauernmoossee. We then hiked a bit along the lake. If we had had less snow and more time, we would have carried on to the Weißee but instead, we chose to cut down towards the Grünsee and complete the loop back to Einzigerboden.

Bathrooms: yes, at Einzigerboden
Public Transit: yes, bus 672 runs from Uttendorf-Stubachtal train station directly to the Einzigerboden parking lot
