One of the best things we did while visiting Lake Atitlán, the deepest lake in Central America, was hiking up to the Mirador Kaqasiiwaan as it gave us a fabulous view overlooking the whole lake, surrounded by incredible volcanoes and with the little towns dotted around the edges.
Lake Atitlán was the second stop of my Guatemala adventure, with the country being the fourth of my Central America backpacking trip. My mission while planning out my Central America trip was to make it as varied as possible, visiting both big cities and small towns, gorgeous beaches and remote forests. My Central America trip covered five countries in five weeks; the first three (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua) with my partner Tobi and the last two (Guatemala, Belize) with Ina, a friend from Salzburg.

The Mirador Kawasiiwaan is located on the edge of the town of San Juan and is a popular short hike up to a panoramic viewpoint. At the top, there is a colourfully-painted platform with seating and there are also plenty of little huts selling refreshments and souvenirs.
Although it was a lot of work, I made daily vlogs on Instagram reels of every single day of my Central America trip which I branded "the backpacking series".

When: year-round, but recommended during dry season November to April
Where: the hike starts at the Trailhead; you need to pay 20 Quetzals per person to hike up to the Mirador Kaqasiiwaan
Difficulty: easy-intermediate; lots of stairs!
Length: from the Trailhead, the return hike is just 1.5km
→ Check out my exact route on Strava!
Directions: there is only one route up and it follows a set of stairs all the way to the Mirador
Bathrooms: no
Public Transit: you can either walk to the Trailhead from San Juan (which we did on the way back as it was only about 1km) or you can take a tuktuk for 10 Quetzals per person (which we did on the way there)
