I am traveling around New Zealand, originally on a three month tourist visa and now on a twenty-three month working holiday visa. My first extended stop has been in Kaikoura, a tiny seaside town of just 3500 people situated on the east coast about 2 1/2 hours north of Christchurch on Highway 1.
Kaikoura is popular with tourists thanks to its marine wildlife; dolphins, seals and whales are in abundance around here. The proximity of Kaikoura to the ocean in combination with the impressive Kaikoura Ranges that surround the whole peninsula make this place one pretty spot.
Sunset is a lovely time of day here; seen best from any of the beaches in the area or, as I found out today, the Kaikoura Lookout on Scarborough Road just past the Innovative Waste Centre. You get the perfect shot of the peninsula with the ocean lapping up on both sides with the mountains perfectly framing the whole view.
Check the photos out for yourself and you'll see just why I've spent the past six weeks here!
