I have lived in Salzburg since late 2021 and in that time have spent many a morning at brunch, a midday at lunch or a cafe, an evening at a dinner restaurant, sharing a delicious meal with friends or family. Salzburg is small but as it is a very touristy destination boasts many restaurants; way more than you'd expect from such a little city!

Nearly anything you're craving, you'll probably find it here. I've not even been able to include every place I've tried as they've disappeared from memory, but I've trawled through my photo albums and old Instagram stories to try and bring a massive selection of delicious spots to try. I'll keep updating this list as I continue to sample more yummy spots.
You should pretty much always make a reservation for restaurants in Salzburg. No matter what day of the week or time, you're always safer off making one. More often than not, restaurants are fully booked and don't accept walk-ins. You can book many restaurants in Salzburg via Google Maps; otherwise you might need to call in and many of them do speak English.

Visiting Salzburg
I've lived in Salzburg since 2021 and have explored so much of it throughout the seasons.
Austria can be visited all year-round, depending on what you're interested in. Austria is lucky in that it experiences all four seasons fully: flowers in the spring, heat and sun in the summer, changing leaves in the autumn and full-on snow and Christmas in the winter.

Cafés
Café Bazar
An iconic coffeehouse built in 1881 and unchanged since, this is a traditional (and quite bougie) café where the upper class came to sit and read their newspapers, gossip with waiters and watch the world go by.
Location: Schwarzstraße 3, overlooking the Salzach
Café Tomaselli
This café in the heart of the Altstadt was once the café of choice of the Mozart family, so this one is a particularly popular one. Go around an hour before they close for the best chance at a good seat outside.
Location: Alter Markt 9, on the edge of the Residenzplatz
My Mom's
My Mom's is a little coffee shop with the best window display in the city where they sell mouthwateringly delicious baked goods plus creative, cozy drinks to go with. I highly recommend the cookies and cinnamon rolls but really, everything is yummy. I've gone through at least five loyalty cards with them already...

220Grad Rupertinum
220Grad roasts their own beans and has an impressive selection of beverages. I especially enjoy their chai lattes with a cheeky slice of cake.
I included this under lunch too because I often stop in for a yummy seasonal meal made with local, fresh ingredients.
Location: Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse 9, across from the famous Festspielehaus
220Grad Nonntal
This other location is smaller than Rupertinum but just as delightful. I particularly like coming here on a sunny day and nabbing a spot in their little terrace out back for a coffee.

Kaffeeothek
My latest favourite café in Salzburg is this adorable spot in the Getreidegasse. These guys are the experts when it comes to a good coffee! You can choose from a selection of their daily roasts available to make your perfect cup. Sit indoors in the cozy brick rooms or outdoors in cute alleyway.

Breakfast & Brunch
Humboldt Bio
This yummy restaurant offers a mouthwatering spread for brunch, lunch and dinner. The food is locally sourced and organic. I've tried it for all meals, but I have to say that brunch is consistently the real reason to keep coming back, especially their three-bowl brunch.
Location: Gstättengasse 4, in the Anton-Neumayr-Platz
St. Peter Stiftskulinarium
This tiny gem takes the title of the oldest restaurant in Europe. Built into the walls of the St. Peter's Abbey, you're going to feel a wonderful ambiance. In my opinion, the food is a bit overpriced for what you get, but you pay for the experience and the ability to say you've dined in Europe's oldest restaurant!

Das Kaffeehaus by Hotel Melanie
Traditional homebaked goods, fresh brunch platters and really good coffee make this little gem on the Chiemseegasse the perfect spot for brunch, lunch or just a quick coffee pick-me-up.
Location: Chiemseegasse 5, just off the Kapitelplatz
GustaV
This hole-in-the-wall all-vegan spot is the perfect cozy brunch nook serving up homemade vegan goodies. They aim to keep their ecological footprint as small as possible so you'll find healthy, locally-sourced ingredients and a small menu put together with love.
Location: Wolf-Dietrich-Strasse 33, in the Neustadt
Coolinarik
Coolinarik is a cute little café featuring homemade, regionally-sourced dishes. It's primarily a breakfast/brunch spot where they serve up delicious coffees in glass cactus mugs alongside homemade Knödel (Austrian dumplings).
Location: Münzgasse 1, at the edge of the Altstadt
Café am Kai
Café am Kai is nestled right on the Salzach, a perfect spot to people watch as people going for their strolls, runs or bike rides along the river. The best seats are outdoors on the terrace but on a cooler morning, you might find that curling up in their cozy indoors is the ticket!
Location: Müllner Hauptstraße 4, right on the river
The Green Garden
Every single thing on the menu here is fully vegan and so mouthwateringly good. I love being able to walk into a restaurant and order absolutely anything I like off the menu, so an all-vegan restaurant is just such a treat. I had the breakfast platter which included samples of loads of different things from the menu and it was yummy.
Location: Nonntaler Haupstraße 16, tucked next to St Erhard Church
YAZZOON
This place serves all-day Oriental brunch till 5pm (as brunches ought to be served!) and we loved the brunch platter with a whole range of mouthwatering little dishes from baba ganoush to hummus and an avocado tartar, alongside housemade bread. Yum!

Lunch
220Grad Rupertinum
While I've included these guys under the café section as they're mostly known for their coffee roasts, I also love having lunch here because they've always got a fresh and delicious seasonal lunch menu on offer.
Location: Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse 9, across from the famous Festspielehaus
220Grad Nonntal
This other location is smaller and moodier, but just as delightful. I particularly like coming here on a sunny day and nabbing a spot in their little terrace out back for a colourful, locally-soured, seasonal lunch.

Coffee House
I love coming here for their massive selection of brunch, lunch and baked goods, including loads of vegan and vegetarian options. They also have one of the best chai lattes in Salzburg (in my opinion) plus outlets and comfy seating which also make it a great place to bring your laptop for a couple of hours.
Location: Linzer Gasse 39, tucked a little bit back with a big terrace in the Neustadt
Afro Cafe
Afro Coffee is one of the most well-known coffee and tea brands available in Salzburg and you'll find it being served across the city. Make the time to go to the source and have a yummy, comforting lunch to go with it!
Location: Bürgerspitalpl. 5, across from the Mönchsberg
FIT.smartfood
They pride themselves on a healthy, sustainable menu. The meals are simple but delicious and great for a quick lunch on the go. I recommend their veg burger!
Location: Maxglaner Hauptstraße 8, in the Maxglan neighbourhood
dean&david
A quick and healthy twist on fast food, dean&david does yummy and fresh smoothies, salads and bowls which are the perfect quick lunch. Their plant-based chick'n is seriously good.
Location: Makartplatz 3, at the entrance to the Mirabell Gardens
Ping Pong Poke
Ping Pong Poke makes massive, fresh and filling bowls. You can select from pre-designed bowls and wraps or you can make your own bowl choosing from all sorts of yummy goodies. I was also intrigued by some of the more unique salad ingredients, not typical of a fast food spot, such as curry-flavoured granola and popcorn!
Location: Münzgasse 1, at the end of the Altstadt, and Franz-Josef-Straße 7, near the Mirabell Gardens
Steinterrasse
Often people come here just for drinks so I've included it in that section too but it's also a sweet spot for lunch or dinner. The roof terrace is arguably one of the best views of the whole city, right in front of the Kapuzinerberg. It's a bit of a bougie spot, so I recommend dressing up a bit.

Panzerhalle
The Panzerhalle is one of my all-time favourite lunch destinations in Salzburg. It's a big market hall with lots of different vendors serving up delicious cuisines from around the world, including my personal favourites: fresh pasta at Schachner & Pasta, pad thai at Little Thai and Indian food at Surya.

Pizza & Pasta
Cafe San Marco
I love this spot in the summer because then they extend the restaurant right into the park of the Makartplatz and you can have your dinner outdoors!
Location: Makartplatz 5, so you can have your summer dinner in the park
Vegitalian
An entirely vegan Italian spot that just hits the nail on the head with their Italian comfort food. It's truly like a slice of Italy in Salzburg plus they've got a cute little outdoor terrace for nice evenings.
Location: Müllner Hauptstraße 26, just back from the Salzach
Superstanza
In my opinion, Superstanza is the best Italian restaurant in Salzburg. Boasting a massive menu with scrumptious flavours, this is a place you really shouldn't miss. Plus they serve Crodino, an alcohol-free Aperol Spritz alternative; it's one of the few restaurants in Salzburg that does.
Location: Lederergasse 10, just off the Linzer Gasse
Organic Pizza Salzburg
This hole-in-the-wall pizza spot serves up exactly what it says: organic pizzas. Mouthwateringly yummy with a delicious thin crust, I love this tiny spot. Vegan options are also available.
Location: Franz-Josef-Straße 24A, off the Linzer Gasse
L'Osteria
I love this Italian place for its classic dishes and especially for the fact that it's one of the restaurants open the latest in Salzburg, perfect for when a late-night pasta craving hits!
Location: Dreifaltigkeitsgasse 10, off the Linzer Gasse
Casa Napoli
Probably my favourite pizza spot in Salzburg, including gluten-free pizza (you just have to pre-order it the day before)! They also do an excellent cannelloni.
Location: Bergstraße 21A
Sushi
Kombu
Probably my favourite sushi in Salzburg. Their downtown location has closed down but they're still out at the Schloss Hellbrunn. A little pricey, but mouthwateringly good and with lots of vegetarian options.
Location: Hellbrunner Straße 73, with a mountain view
east
This Asian Fusion restaurant does a delightful curation of really tasty food from across the continent. I recommend sitting upstairs in the beautifully-designed space and trying a bit of everything. YUM.
Location: Getreidegasse 36a, in a cute little square encircled by restaurants
YŌJI
One of the best sushi spots in Salzburg, this small restaurant is hugely popular. I can definitely recommend their vegetarian plate and you'll get to try a delicious variety of properly mouthwatering veggie sushi - none of this boring plain avocado or cucumber rolls, but really creative and flavourful rolls.
Location: Gstättengasse 9, tucked against the wall of the Monchsberg
Shiso
Shiso is an All You Can Eat (AYCE) sushi and Japanese restaurant with a huge selection of fresh sushi and made-to-order Japanese dishes that you can request from the Teppanyaki grill. Reservations are a must and make sure to give yourself plenty of time to try all the different foods on offer in the buffet!
Location: Eberhard-Fugger-Straße 3, in Parsch
Austrian
Pauli Stubm
If you're after traditional Austrian food such as Schnitzel or Käsespätzle (noodle-like dumplings baked in cheese), then Pauli Stubm is a classic spot in Salzburg. Tucked away behind the Kapitelplatz, you'll get the real experience here.
Location: Herrengasse 16, just up from the Kapitelplatz
Zum Zirkelwirt
Zum Zirkelwirt is a very traditional Austrian restaurant, decor and all. They serve some of my favourite Austrian foods and I can highly recommend giving them a go:
- Spinatknödel - a fluffy yeast dumpling filled with spinach and cheese
- Käsespätzle - noodle-like dumplings baked in cheese
- Germknödel - a fluffy yeast dumpling filled with jam topped with poppy seeds and vanilla cream sauce
- Kaiserschmarrn - shredded pancakes topped with jam
Location: Pfeifergasse 14, at the edge of the Altstadt, just beyond Mozartplatz
Johann
Next to the Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, making it a great spot while waiting for your train, this Viennese café and restaurant offers traditional cuisine including my favourite Käsespätzle, noodle-like dumplings baked in cheese. It's not my favourite Austrian restaurant, but it's definitely a convenient one and the servers are lovely.
Location: Südtiroler Platz 1, at the train station
Zwettler's Wirtshaus
Zwettler's Wirtshaus is my favourite traditional Austrian restaurant in Salzburg. From the moment you step in, dark lighting and heavy, wooden decor wraps you up and invites you for an evening of cozy dining. They serve a fantastic menu of local food; my favourites are Spinatknödel, fluffy yeast dumplings stuffed with spinach and cheese, and Käsespätzle, noodle-like dumplings baked in cheese.
Location: Kaigasse 3, at the edge of the Altstadt
Dinner
Spicy Spices
This little hole-in-the-wall, all-vegetarian, family-run restaurant is simply a delight. Massive portions featuring handwritten signs pinned to the windows and the kindest owner... it's hands down one of my favourite restaurants in the city. Just know it's cash only.

My Indigo
My Indigo is just a go-to classic and I come here all the time for a quick bowl. It's like fast food but super fresh and healthy. They've got loads of vegan and vegetarian options and really just hit the spot for a quick meal. There are a number of locations across Salzburg.
Location: Rudolfskai 8, right on the Salzach / Auerspergstraße 10, near Mirabell / Sterneckstraße 28, behind the Kapuzinerberg
ICHI GO ICHI E
This ramen restaurant is super popular thanks to its massive portions of steaming hot, yummy ramen with all sorts of combos on offer with different fillings and toppings in a bright, minimalist room.
Location: Sterneckstraße 33, behind the Kapuzinerberg
Taj Mahal
I genuinely ADORE this Indian restaurant. They have such fun over-the-top decor, the service is great and the food is seriously mouthwatering - try the paneer mekhani, I promise you won't be disappointed. I can't even count how many times I've eaten here, either in the restaurant or ordered takeout for a cozy night on the sofa.
Location: Bayerhamerstraße 13, in between the Kapuzinerberg and the Hauptbahnhof
LAZARTE
This is a sweet little Latin American hole-in-the-wall spot serving up delicious tacos (vegetarian options, too!) and other authentic dishes. It was quiet the day we went but apparently they also do live music nights and the kitchen is right in the middle of the restaurant so you can watch them cook.
Location: Franz-Josef-Straße 5, off the Linzer Gasse
Habesha
This great spot serves up authentic, delicious Ethiopian food. The owner is fabulous, too! I recommend the vegetarian serving platter so you can dig your hands in to lots of different flavours and try lots of things.
Location: Gebirgsjägerplatz 1, near the Hauptbahnhof
Dessert
Eis-Greissler
When it's hot out, there is simply nothing for it but to beeline it to the nearest ice cream shop for a cold treat. My favourite ice cream in Salzburg is at Eis-Greissler where they make everything themselves in an adorable hole-in-the-wall shop.

Moritz Eis
One of the best ice creams in Salzburg is Moritz Eis, originally started by an Austrian man in Serbia and now expanding across the continent. We have Austria's only location at the end of the iconic Getreidegasse, the big shopping street in the heart of the Altstadt.

Salzburger Brezen
A traditional Salzburg treat, you must stop for a Salzburger Brezen (pretzel) as you wander through the Altstadt at the market open Monday to Saturday. They've got so many different flavours and kinds with truly something for everyone.
Location: Universitätsplatz 1, at the daily market
Zum Zirkelwirt
This very traditional Austrian restaurant - decor and all - does two of my favourite Austrian traditional desserts: a Germknödel, a fluffy yeast dumpling filled with jam and served poppy seeds topped with vanilla cream sauce, and Kaiserschmarrn, shredded pancakes topped with jam. YUM.
Location: Pfeifergasse 14, at the edge of the Altstadt, just beyond Mozartplatz
Gelateria Romana
Using only organic and fresh ingredients, this place does delicious ice cream and crêpes with really unique flavours. Plus, they're open late so it is the perfect spot for a sweet evening treat.
Location: Linzer Gasse 3, in the middle of the Neustadt
Drinks
Steinterrasse
Most popular with drinks - although they also serve food as well so I've included it in the lunch section too - the Steinterasse roof terrace is arguably one of the best views of the whole city, right in front of the Kapuzinerberg. It's a bit of a bougie spot, so I recommend dressing up a bit.

Mentor's
This hole-in-the-wall drinks spot is always full, lit up with little candles and warm cozy lighting and serving great drinks, including some delicious mocktails. It's in the heart of the "going-out" district in Salzburg and near some great dancing spots and other bars, so it's the perfect place to start your evening.
Location: Gstättengasse 3, near all the other bars and clubs
Superstanza
In my opinion, the best Italian restaurant in Salzburg, but also a fun spot to come for drinks including yummy mocktails. My favourite? Crodino, which is an alcohol-free Aperol Spritz; it's one of the few restaurants in Salzburg that serves it.

Burdock Punch & Cocktails
This fantastic spot just at the edge of the Altstadt is one of the best bars I've been to. They have a traditional menu you can order off of, but you can also tell the bartender pretty much whatever flavours you like and he'll come up with the most incredible combinations - including alcohol-free! It's a really fun experience and the interior decor is moody and inviting.

Pepe Culture Club
Many people complain that Salzburg nightlife is non-existent and sure, while it doesn't compete with big cities, I actually love our smaller night life! It's not overwhelming and loud and there are a few really fun clubs to go dancing in and really... a few good ones are all you need! My favourite would have to be reggaeton at Pepe's with a bar upstairs and a dance floor downstairs.

Nice guide — very helpful overview of Salzburg cafes and restaurants. Do you have a favourite spot for a quiet weekday brunch that’s easy to get a reservation for? Also, for anyone planning a trip, I checked prices on https://world-prices.com/en/austria/prices but it’s unclear how up-to-date the data is.
