First Sunrise in the World at East Cape

What a privilege to be able to say we were the very first people on the planet to watch the sunrise on June 6, 2020.

A 6am start saw us walking up 800 steps to the easternmost lighthouse in the entire world on a small property on the East Cape, on the far east coast of New Zealand's North Island on the Gisborne Peninsula. The lighthouse has prime views over the Southern Pacific Ocean and offers those early birds who stand out on the exposed plateau at the summit of the hill at day break the chance to witness the sun come up before any other place in the world does.

Absolutely surreal.

We camped the night before at the East Cape Camp Ground for $10 per person giving us the perfect spot to be close enough to do just a short drive in the early morning!
