Vegan Food Guide for Lisbon

As I wrote in my vegan food guide for Porto, when you think of Portugal, you may think of an abundance of seafood on the menu and lots of meat and cheeses. Well, you're right. But, just like the burgeoning vegan food scene in Porto, Lisbon has tons of vegan options - from sweet treats to savoury dining so I tried out some of the best spots in the city during my time there.

Aside from having delicious food. Portugal is also a very affordable country by relative European standards, which meant that popping out to the various vegan spots in town was a welcome and doable way to spend some of my weekends!

Here is my guide to some of the best vegan spots in Lisbon:

SCOOP N DOUGH

A Lisbon vegan food guide would not be complete without mentioning the world's #1 vegan donut shop! Scoop n Dough has nailed the perfect fluffy donut recipe in massive menu of flavours. Mouth watering, I couldn't help picking out four delicious choices: chocolate hazelnut, date and orange sticky pudding, apple crumble and lemon poppyseed. They also do vegan ice cream, too. I know - win-win.

Location: R. das Portas de Santo Antão 78

LEGUMI SUSHI

A 100% vegan sushi restaurant where every single mouth-watering roll is a plant-based alternative to traditional sushi? Yes please! This tiny hole-in-the-wall is just a takeout spot, but they have a partnership with Machimbombo just down the road where you can sit down and order their sushi there in a fun and colouful pub.

Location: Calçada do Combro 56

Ao 26

This delicious spot offers comfort food and traditional Portuguese food (including the famous francesinha) all plant-based. They've got yummy starters, mains and a range of desserts that all hit the spot.

Location: R. Vítor Cordon 26

A CARIOCA LDA.

Vegan pastel de nata! What more do you want! These guys are the best spot in town for their vegan take on the famous Portuguese pastry that everyone simply must try. You can get them by themselves, but I recommend going for the box of six for a real treat.

Location: R. da Misericórdia 9

ORGANI CHIADO

This one's a touristy spot so you're looking on the pricier side, but the menu is a range of well-prepared comfort dishes. I had a surprisingly good Thai tofu dish (but the lasagne looked equally good), so this spot is definitely an easy crowd-pleaser.

Location: Calçada Nova de São Francisco 2

jana meerman kong restaurant lisbon

KONG

On a quiet street, you'll find this cozy spot which offers a range of traditional Portuguese dishes all veganized. The service is great and the food so good you'll hardly be able to tell it's vegan - I almost felt like I really had bacon bits on my pasta!

Location: R. do Crucifixo 30

jana meerman plant base lisbon

PLANT BASE

This was HANDS DOWN my favourite vegan dinner spot in Lisbon. It's a vegan think tank of sorts, they are constantly experimenting with new chefs and new vegan dishes. There's a massive menu offering all the wonderful comfort foods - we had probably the best vegan pizza I've ever had, and Nepalese dumplings (momos) but seriously, the entire menu looked mouthwatering and it was hard to decide. They do tacos, burgers, Pakistani food... the list goes on. This place is busy, so come early on a weeknight for a table.

Location: R. da Oliveira ao Carmo 9

THE FOOD TEMPLE

This tiny hole-in-the-wall spot is a popular delight. You can choose to sit outside on the steps true hipster style - I'm sure this place is endearing in the summer - or cosy up inside their small space indoors and feel like you're at a friend's house. The great thing about this spot is they're not trying to provide alternatives to meat/dairy, this is true vegan food and it's divine. Small portions, so order lots, but enjoy it all.
