Our third and final stop in Guatemala was in the far north of the country on the little island of Flores, the base for which to visit the famous Mayan ruins of Tikal.

My mission while planning out my Central America trip was to make it as varied as possible, visiting both big cities and small towns, gorgeous beaches and remote forests. My Central America trip covered five countries in five weeks; the first three (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua) with my partner Tobi and the last two (Guatemala, Belize) with Ina, a friend from Salzburg.
Although it was a lot of work, I made daily vlogs on Instagram reels of every single day of my Central America trip which I branded "the backpacking series".

Most travelers visit Flores as a base to visit the nearby Mayan ruins of Tikal. These incredible ruins are one of the largest archaeological sites ever found of pre-Columbian Mayan civilization; here is my guide:
To visit the Mayan ruins of Tikal, you will want to base yourself in nearby Flores. You can find out how to get to Flores in my detailed travel guide. Below, I've outlined specific information for reaching Tikal from Flores:
By guided tour: The best way to visit Tikal is to join a guided tour as this will include pick up in Flores, the one-hour drive north on a shuttle to the park entrance, the 20-minute drive into the park, a four-hour guided tour and then the return drive to Flores. The guided tour within the park was absolutely worth it because you learn SO much about the history and meaning of Tikal beyond just wandering around the ruins.

By shuttle: If you want to visit Tikal on your own, you can also arrange transport from Flores to Tikal and then explore the park without a guide. You can book this transport in Flores with a local transport company.
By car: If you have decided to travel through Guatemala or Central America by car, you can also travel to Tikal with your own wheels. I don't have any experience with driving in Guatemala so please do your own research here.

We were picked up in Flores just after 5am for a one-hour drive north on a shuttle the park entrance. There, we had to show our passports and pay 150 Quetzals (~€17 at the time of writing) for the park ticket which was not included in the price of the guided tour.
Then it was back onto the shuttle for another 20-minute drive into the park where we had an hour in the restaurant where coffee and breakfast was available for purchase. This was a little frustrating for me because I didn't want to buy breakfast there having already eaten before so having had to wake up at the crack of dawn just to sit in a restaurant for an hour was a bit silly. But that's the joy of being on a scheduled guided tour!
The rest of the day was fabulous and I quickly forgot about the first hour as we then were led by our great guide on foot into the park for a four-hour tour of all the main highlights of Tikal. I seriously recommend a guide because otherwise you'll find yourself just wandering around the big stone ruins not really understanding their significance.
There is a decent amount of walking and climbing up the various pyramid-like structures so wear comfy shoes, drink plenty of water (drinks are available for purchase throughout the park) and don't forget your camera!

More coati - or dinosaurs?!

Apparently they used to play a football-like game here
