My Self-Care Spots in Salzburg, Austria

jana meerman untersberg hike salzburg austria (3)

I have been living in Salzburg since late 2021 and, in that time, I've been carefully curating my self-care toolkit. While I was at a nail appointment the other week, I was chatting to my nail lady about putting together a little guide to all my favourite self-care spots in Salzburg for everyone who's ever DM'ed me for recommendations. Think beauty, mental health and physical health...

A bonus about the places below is that they speak English, which can be super helpful if you're just visiting and need a self-care spot or if you've just moved here and can't quite yet grasp Austrian-German dialect!

Disclaimer: I have not tried every single spot in Salzburg, these are just the places I came across after doing my own research and love my experiences there and recommend them to my friends all the time. I hope it's a useful starting point for you if you live here or are visiting here, too.

Visiting Salzburg

I've lived in Salzburg since 2021 and have explored so much of it throughout the seasons.

Austria can be visited all year-round, depending on what you're interested in. Austria is lucky in that it experiences all four seasons fully: flowers in the spring, heat and sun in the summer, changing leaves in the autumn and full-on snow and Christmas in the winter.

To complement my self-care guide to Salzburg, check out my guides for visiting Salzburg throughout the year by clicking on the photos below:

A night of dancing is also a fantastic way to let loose, move your body and have fun. Everyone who knows me knows that Pepe Culture Club (in the Altstadt, not the Cocktail Bar in the Neustadt) is my favourite for a night of reggaeton (18+).

Hiking

Hiking is my favourite activity. The mountains heal and bring joy, clarity and a feeling of “heck yeah I did that!!” Every single time, something about putting one foot in front of the other to climb up a mountain and come out on top just works for me. The mountains have been a constant source of strength, always.

Biking

The best way to get around Salzburg is by bike and there are so many gorgeous biking trails throughout the city, along the river and out to the different lakes and forests.

Swimming

Especially in the spring and summer, there are so many gorgeous spots to swim in both in the city and throughout Salzburgerland. The perfect way to cool off and move your body in a low-impact way.

Skiing

In the winter, you can still get up into the mountains around Salzburgerland on your skis (or snowboard!) and continue to enjoy the nature year-round. Skiing is such a great workout and seriously so beautiful out here.

Ice skating

In the winter, you can put your ice skates on and go ice skating at a number of spots throughout the city. I love to ice skate on the Leopoldskroner Weiher if it's frozen enough or at the Redbull Ice Arena outdoor skating path through the Volksgarten.

Picnic Spots in Salzburg

Almkanal

The Almkanal is my go-to hang out spot next to a cold and clear-as-glass canal for icy swims.

Salzach

By far one of the most popular summer activities in the city is to sit yourself down somewhere along the river and have a picnic. On a warm day, the grassy riverbanks are likely to be full of people enjoying the sun, having a snooze, sharing a meal, reading a book...

Address: Salzach

Food Spots in Salzburg

A delicious meal, especially when shared with friends, can go a long way for self-care.

Because I have been to so many cafes and breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, drinks and dessert spots in Salzburg, I've written a separate Salzburg Food Guide with all my recommendations:
