The Rossfeld Panoramastraße is Germany's highest road. It's nestled right against the border with Austria in southern Germany, part of the Berchtesgaden National Park. My other favourite places to visit in Berchtesgaden National Park:
The Rossfeld Panoramastraße is primarily a beautiful drive, with spots to stop along the way with scenic views across Austria to one side and Germany and Berchtesgaden National Park to the other. We even spotted Salzburg from our picnic spot.
There are Bavarian huts along the way where you can stop for a bite to eat, the Panoramastraße is the starting point for a number of hikes and it even is a ski hill in the winter months with the surest- guarantee of snow in the region..
Karolina, one of my best friends from Salzburg, and I drove up to the Rossfeld Panoramastraße on a slightly overcast Sunday - we would have had better views on a clear day, but loved it all the same. We said hello to the cows along the way, stopped at a few different viewpoints, and had a picnic high above overlooking Salzburg.
The Panoramastraße is actually one of the filming locations of The Sound of Music, featured in the final scene of the film when the Von Trapp family crosses the Alps on foot.
How much the Rossfeld Panoramastraße costs
As the Panoramastraße is a private federal road, maintenance and costs of the the road are covered by a toll. You can pay at either entrance of the Panoramastraße - at the time of writing, we paid €9 for a car; it is a different price depending on what kind of vehicle you're driving. You can pay by card at the automated ticket machines.
The latest toll prices are here.
How to get to the Rossfeld Panoramastraße
We drove the Rossfeld Panoramastraße but also saw countless motorcycles and bicycles making the trek. We drove from Salzburg. There are two toll stations - at the north at Roßfeldstraße 150 and at the south at Purtschellerstraße 1.
If you'd like to visit and don't have a car, you're in luck! Regional bus 848 does the route from Berchtesgaden.
The road is 1600 metres in altitude and took us about two hours to visit, with stops for photos and our picnic. Of course, you could spend a whole day here if you add some hiking and exploring, too.
