24 Hours in Munich

A few months ago, one of my closest friends Ina invited me to The Weeknd Concert in Munich at the beginning of August.

Somehow, even though I'm half-German, have visited many places in Germany many times, literally live less than two hours away and have flown to or from the airport there multiple times, before this trip, I'd never been to Munich!

Home to approximately 1.5 million people, Munich is the vibrant capital of Bavaria, the southern region of Germany. Perhaps most famously known for the annual Oktoberfest, there's plenty more to discover in this popular German city. So, a little girls weekend trip came about and we had a brilliant 24 hours exploring, dancing, eating and shopping.

How to Get to Munich

I've flown in and out of Munich's International Airport many times; from the airport you can catch an S-Bahn train directly to Munich Hauptbahnhof in the heart of the city in about 45 minutes.

We took the train up from Salzburg; trains arrive at Munich Hauptbahnhof from across Germany and neighbouring countries. Our train took less than two hours and was easy and direct.

From Hauptbahnhof, you can take the S-Bahn around the city, or you can walk! Walking is a great way to explore the bits in between all the touristy destinations. We also booked a hotel near Hauptbahnhof to make it easier with our luggage.

Where to Stay in Munich

As a big city, you'll find accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. As we were just there for one night to attend a concert, we opted for something affordable and in walking distance from the Hauptbahnhof so that we could easily get to the train station and back with our luggage so as to maximize exploring time!

We spent the night at Bayer's City Hotel and found it clean, comfortable and well-located. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel, but there's a popular cafe right next door.

Where to Eat in Munich

We had a very late dinner of pizza after the concert but on the Saturday, we had a big breakfast next door to the hotel at the very busy and popular Coffee Fellows. After our day of walking, shopping and exploring, we had an early dinner at the make-your-own-pasta-dish spot Vapiano.

Things to Do in Munich

Munich is definitely most famous for its annual Oktoberfest, a beer-drinking festival every autumn. But there's still other nice things to do in the city the rest of the year!

Watch a concert at Olympiapark

The main reason we came to Munich was to go to The Weeknd Concert at Olympiapark. Olympiapark is a beautiful open air stadium and a brilliant live music venue. It's also host to a whole bunch of other events, such as markets and sport events and is a big culture hub for Munich.

Wander through the Hofgarten

The gardens of the 17th century Residenz München Castle are well worth a wander for a slice of greenery and peace in the bustling city.
