Fig Tree Walk in Imbil State Forest, Australia

The Fig Tree Walk is a fascinating, easy wander in Imbil State Forest where you can walk alongside 150-year-old Moreton fig trees. It's situated inland from the Sunshine Coast along the Little Yabba Creek.

We're currently living full-time in our campervan, a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter, and exploring Australia, with a plan of "driving the lap" (completing the entire perimeter of the country). I first visited Australia in 2019, following the classic backpacker route, mostly visiting big cities, staying in hostels and traveling by public transport. This time, with the freedom of our campervan, we're trying to hit the lesser known spots and go slower.

For thousands of years, the Baiambora group of the Kabi Kabi people have lived on this land.

The first Europeans in the Mary River Valley were actually escaped convicts from Moreton Bay of which some died and others joined the Aboriginal network. Permanent settlers began to arrive in the Imbil area along the fertile Mary River Valley from the 1840s to log its trees resulting in the displacement, disease-transfer and death of many Aboriginals.

Read an incredible and thorough history of the Imbil area.

By car: The only way to reach Imbil State Forest with your own wheels. It's about an hour's drive west of the Sunshine Coast. There are parking lots at the Little Yabba Rest Area on both sides of the road from where you cross back over the bridge over Little Yabba Creek to start the walk.
