Day Spa at Hotel Krallerhof in Austria

One of our favourite ways to relax and unwind is in typical Austrian style by heading to a day spa. It's always such a wonderful, indulging experience.

We were meant to be running the annual Salzburg half-marathon but unfortunately, by the time we went to sign up, it was already sold out! This is of course great for them... but not so great for us. So we decided to rest, recharge and nourish our sore bodies from the training we'd be doing and instead spent the day at a day spa!

One of the day spas that had been on my list for a while thanks to some viral Instagram reels was at the Hotel Krallerhof in Leogang. Wellness hotels only give out a handful of day spa spots; priority of course goes to their overnight guests.

It was a delightful spring spa day. Austrians just have the spa culture nailed - think luxuriously designed spas, incorporating natural spaces both indoor and out, overlooking mountains; yup, relaxation perfection.

How to Get to Hotel Krallerhof

By flight: The closest airport to Hotel Krallerhof is in Salzburg. The larger Munich Airport is just a few hours further north. You can take the train from either to Leogang station and be collected there by Hotel Krallerhof's free shuttle bus.

By car: Hotel Krallerhof is a one and a half hour drive from Salzburg. Free parking is provided outside the hotel. You must have winter tires between November and April to access Hotel Krallerhof.

→ If you don't have your own car, you can rent one in Salzburg.

By train: From Salzburg, the train to Hotel Krallerhof takes about two and a half hours with a connection in either Saalfelden, Zell am See or Wörgl. Hotel Krallerhof is just a short transfer away from the Leogang train station; you can email Hotel Krallerhof in advance and they will collect you from Leogang in their free shuttle bus.

Staying at Hotel Krallerhof

As I live in Salzburg, we opted to book the Day Spa at Hotel Krallerhof to spend a full day in their mountain wellness centre. Alternatively, if you're coming from further abroad and want to spend a few days at Hotel Krallerhof indulging in all their offers, then you can book a room in the gorgeous hotel. Facilities at Hotel Krallerhof include:

  • Right on the ski hill, with ski-in ski-out access, in winter
  • Access to hiking trails in summer and free use of the cable car next to the hotel
  • Excellent buffet breakfast and gourmet on-site dining (we loved the asparagus dishes)
  • A serene 3000m² wellness centre, including a 5500m² natural bathing lake with an integrated infinity pool and adults-only sections
  • Fitness space, tennis courts, bikes for rent and yoga studio
  • Seriously good service from their staff
  • Exquisite outdoor spaces
  • Luxurious and comfortable interior design

The Day Spa at Hotel Krallerhof

As I live in Salzburg, we opted to book the Day Spa at Puradies to spend a full day in their mountain wellness centre. We had access to over 3000m² of world-class, calming and beautifully designed wellness spaces including their 5000m² natural bathing lake with an integrated infinity pool from 9:00am to 8:00pm as well as a buffet breakfast.

We arrived and parked our car in the outdoor parking lot and stepped inside the low key lobby where we were greeted with the same level of service as if we were overnight guests. Our bags were looked after as we were guided through the hotel to the breakfast room where a few different rooms were spread with a breakfast buffet featuring local produce and plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options; I can highly recommend the porridge.

After breakfast, we collected our bags from reception and were provided with a tote containing our fluffy bathrobes and slippers for our day in the spa. We were led to the entrance of the wellness area where we got ready in the changing room. While you need to bring your own swimwear for the outdoor area, the rest is provided by the hotel, including shampoo, body wash, towels, bath robes, slippers and body lotion.

After donning our bathrobes, we had a big, empty day stretching out before us, just waiting for us to fill it with wellness indulgements. As we were some of the first guests into the spa and intent on making the most out of our day pass, we promptly undertook a complete tour of the space, visiting every room, sauna and pool to snap a few photos before other guests began to filter in.

There are two wellness areas, one is for adults only. Here, there is a main silent relaxation room, a number of different kinds of saunas, a yoga studio, an upstairs café, indoor and outdoor pools of various temperatures and of course the iconic outdoor space with the gigantic natural pool overlooking the mountains of Leogang.
