I came across the impeccable Das Edelweiss wellness hotel while scrolling through Instagram one day and immediately pinned it onto my Google Maps knowing one day I'd step foot in their exquisite property.
Last weekend, we did a weekend winter roadtrip east across Austria and stayed in a wellness hotel just south of Graz, the beautiful LOISIUM Südsteiermark. We loved our experience but felt like we didn't give ourselves enough time to properly enjoy the spa as we were also doing lots of outdoors adventures as we drove across the country, including a visit across the border to nearby Maribor in Slovenia.
And so, we decided that this weekend, with plenty of snow in the mountains, we wanted to go and do a proper spa experience, spending 12+ hours enjoying all there is to offer in one of the countless gorgeous wellness hotels in the Austrian Alps. So it is that we booked into the day spa at Das Edelweiss, which quite possibly takes first place for my favourite hotels in the entire world.
By flight: The closest airport to Das Edelweiss is in Salzburg. The larger Munich Airport is just a few hours further north. You can take the train from either, or pre-arrange a transfer with Das Edelweiss.
By car: Das Edelweiss is a one hour drive from Salzburg. Free parking is provided in the underground parking garage underneath the hotel. The parking garage itself is gorgeous, decked out in alpine wood and with electric car charging available, in partnership with Mercedes Benz.
→ If you don't have your own car, you can rent one in Salzburg.
If you are a guest of Das Edelweiss, the latest models from Mercedes are available for test drives during your stay.
By train: Großarl is just 1.5 hours away from Salzburg; take the train to St. Johann im Pongau from where you can pre-arrange a transfer with Das Edelweiss.
As I live in Salzburg, we opted to book the Day Spa at Das Edelweiss to spend a full day in their mountain wellness centre. Alternatively, if you're coming from further abroad and want to spend a few days at Das Edelweiss indulging in all their offers, then you can book a room in the gorgeous hotel. Facilities at Das Edelweiss include:
- Right on the ski hill, with a ski depot in the hotel, in winter
- Access to hiking trails in Salzburgerland in summer
- World-class dining on site
- A 7000m² wellness centre, including adults-only sections and water slides
- Fitness spaces
- Seriously good service from their staff
- Luxurious and comfortable interior design
- And more...
As I live in Salzburg, we opted to book the Day Spa at Das Edelweiss to spend a full day in their mountain wellness centre. We had access over 7000m² of world-class, exquisitely and thoughtfully designed wellness spaces from 7:30am to 9:00pm.
From the moment we arrived, we felt so taken care of. Even though we weren't overnight guests, the level of service and attention was just the same. We checked in at the reception and were greeted warmly and our bags were taken while we had breakfast. A member of staff gave us a tour of the main hotel area and then walked us over to the breakfast buffet where more staff showed us our table, pointed out all the fresh, regional stations of the buffet including local breads and cheeses and a juice and smoothie bar. We indulged in multiple dishes, including made-to-order plates and coffee. The decor at breakfast felt like being tucked away in a cozy cabin with all-wood interiors and endearing decor, all enhanced by the snow softly falling outside the window as the sounds of breakfast clattered around us.
We then returned to reception to collect our bags and were provided with a canvas tote containing our fluffy bathrobes for our day in the spa. A member of staff carried this for us while he showed us the way to the changing rooms, up on the first level. You need to bring your own swimwear for the pools and your own bath slippers are recommended. The rest is provided, including shampoo, body wash, towels and body lotion.
After donning our bathrobes, we had a big, empty day stretching out before us, just waiting for us to fill it with wellness indulgements. As we were some of the first guests into the spa and intent on making the most out of our day pass, we promptly undertook a complete tour of the space, visiting every single room and snapping a few photos before other guests began to filter in.
The first floor has a large indoor swimming pool with plenty of comfortable lounge access all around. This is designed for families, and includes a huge indoor water slide park as well! Upstairs, a mountain spa offers beauty and body treatments including massages, facials, pedicures, manicures and hair and makeup services. These are an additional cost and must be booked in advance.
On the third floor, the adults-only spa space awaits - we spent most of our time here. We selected two day beds in the Moon Room, a beautifully decorated navy blue room with floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass ceiling fixture and Scandinavian-style wooden beds and flooring. This room was so peaceful and comforting to come back to in between swims and sauna sessions. The Red Room next door had more day beds, in a deep red theme. The adults-only spa includes an indoor bio sauna, an infrared room, a wet sauna, a misting station, a hot tub, more day spa lounge spaces, an outdoor panorama sauna and an outdoor ice bath and hot tub. Our day was filled with trying out every single room multiple times on rotation, jumping into the high-ceilinged showers in between. Hourly infusions are offered in the outdoor panorama sauna, guided by the Sauna Master and with certain scented oil infusions, music and hot air waving.
On the upper floors, a large indoor and outdoor pool offers swimming, while the top floor has an adults-only infinity pool overlooking the skiers as they whoosh past on the slopes. On the same floor as the adults-only spa, a bistro is open from 12-5:30pm offering spa-goers a yummy, fresh lunch menu - and the best part is, you can dine in your bathrobe; no need to get changed back into your regular clothes!
We absolutely adored our day here. It was luxurious, peaceful, relaxing and absolutely everything we wanted. The service was unmatched and the facilities exceptionally clean, thoughtfully curated and well-presented. We finished our day with a delicious glass of (non-alcoholic) wine from the bar in the hotel lobby, serenaded by vibey music in a low-lit atmosphere. We can't wait to come back time and time again.
