After a night of dancing in Mallorca, on just a few hours of sleep I rose early in my hostel dorm room to catch a bus from Palma on the southern side of Mallorca to Alcúdia in the north, where I boarded my morning ferry across to Menorca, the fourth and final Balearic island - the other two being Ibiza and Formentera, both of which I visited over Easter.
As soon as I arrived in Ciutadella, the arrival city on Menorca, I checked into my hostel, discovered my shampoo had exploded all over my suitcase, spent an hour sorting out the sloppy mess and then decided to reward myself by spending the rest of the gloriously sunny day at the prettiest beach on Menorca.
Just like Cala Pi, which I crowned Mallorca's prettiest beach, I can't truly say Cala Macarella is Menorca's most beautiful as I haven't seen them all, but this beach is featured on practically every list I found and came highly recommended by a girl at the hostel and it was the prettiest I got to see on the island... so I reckon it's a strong contendor.
The L69 bus runs straight from Ciutadella down to Cala Macarella parking lot, from where you take a twenty minute wander through a sandy forest down to an exquisite white beach surrounded on both sides by high cliffs. I highly recommend walking on the cliffs above for absolutely jaw-dropping views down over the azure waters. If you continue your walk around the bay, you'll reach Cala Macarelleta, the baby version of Cala Macarella, which somehow has even whiter sand and bluer waters - but is much smaller and busier. All in all, a fabulous day to be had.
