Visiting the Basteibrücke in Lohmen, Germany

The Basteibrücke is a mysterious rock formation with a wooden bridge built across part of it in eastern Germany. It's been on my bucket list to see for a very long time and our Easter roadtrip through northern Germany was the perfect opportunity to make that happen!

The Easter long weekend is always a perfect time to head out on a trip, what with shoulder season in full swing, the spring weather looking better and prices still reasonable. In previous years, I've spent my Easters in Northern IrelandIbiza (Spain), New ZealandCalgary (Canada) and hiking in Vancouver (Canada), among other trips.

I have a German mother so I have visited many parts of Germany many, many times as a child. I currently live in Salzburg in Austria and so this Easter was the perfect excuse to re-explore northern Germany and many of the places of my childhood - plus a few other stops along the way.

Our first stop was actually in neighbouring Czechia, where we spent a night exploring the colourful spa town of Karlovy Vary. From there, it was time to kick off the German leg of our trip and we crossed the border again and headed towards Dresden.

Then, it was time to see some bridges!

How to Get to the Basteibrücke

By flight: The closest airport to the Basteibrücke is in Dresden. From the airport, you can actually get straight to the bridge in just an hour of driving or by taking the S-Bahn to Pirna and then bus 254.

By car: We drove to the Basteibrücke from nearby Dresden in about 45 minutes. There is limited parking right at the bridge so instead, we parked at the main Parkplatz and rode the shuttle bus the rest of the way.

→ If you don't have your own car, you can rent one in Dresden.

By train and bus: You can get to the Basteibrücke from Dresden using the S-Bahn and then transfering in Pirna to bus 254.

By day tour: While researching the Basteibrücke, I also found many day tours available from both Dresden and Prague, including transport. This could be a great option if you're already in Dresden or Prague and have a spare day.

How to Visit the Basteibrücke

You can spend as long or as short as you like visiting the Basteibrücke. When you park or get off the shuttle bus at the entrance, you can choose how much you want to explore. Visiting the Basteibrücke is free - you only need to pay for parking and the shuttle ride, but the park itself is open for anyone. According to Wikipedia:

The Bastei is a rock formation rising 194 metres above the Elbe River in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Germany. Reaching a height of 305 metres above sea level, the jagged rocks of the Bastei were formed by water erosion over one million years ago.

There are plenty of hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulties surrounding the Basteibrücke throughout the Sächsische Schweiz National Park or you can simply opt to visit some of the key viewpoints within the Bastei. As we had a lot to squeeze into our day, which started in Dresden and was to end later in Berlin, we just chose to see some of the viewpoints. Wear good walking shoes and be prepared for a lot of visitors; it's a popular spot!

There are some dining options at the entrance and even a hotel if you wish to explore the national park a bit longer.
