The Rossfeld Panoramastraße is Germany's highest road. It's nestled right against the border with Austria in southern Germany, part of the Berchtesgaden National Park.

The road is 1600 metres in altitude and took us about two hours to drive along, including stops for photos and our picnic. Of course, you could spend a whole day here if you add in hiking and exploring, too!
By car, motorcycle or bicycle: The main way to visit the Rossfeld Panoramastraße is with your own wheels, whether two or four. There are two toll stations, one on either end of the road, where you pay your fee to access the road. There is one at the north at Roßfeldstraße 150 and the other is at the south at Purtschellerstraße 1.
→ If you don't have your own car, you can rent one in Salzburg.
By bus: If you'd like to visit the Rossfeld Panoramastraße and don't have your own car, you're in luck! From the nearby town of Berchtesgaden, you can hop onto Regional bus 848.

As the Rossfeld Panoramastraße is a private federal road, maintenance and costs of the the road are covered by a toll. You can pay at either the northern or the southern entrance of the Panoramastraße. There are automated ticket machines which accept card payments. There are different fees depending on what kind of vehicle you're driving; at the time of writing, we paid €9 per car.

As you drive along the road, you can stop at Bavarian huts along the way for a bite to eat. The Panoramastraße is also the starting point for a number of hikes and, in the winter months, is a ski hill claiming to have the surest guarantee of snow in the region!
A friend of mine from Salzburg and I drove up to the Rossfeld Panoramastraße on a slightly overcast Sunday - we would have had better views on a clear day, but loved it all the same. We said hello to the cows along the way, stopped at a few different viewpoints and had a picnic in a meadow overlooking Salzburg.
Plus, the Panoramastraße is actually one of the filming locations of The Sound of Music, featured in the final scene of the film when the Von Trapp family crosses the Alps on foot!
