Lake Tyrrell is a 120,000-year-old salt lake found in northern Victoria. On our drive across Australia, starting from Sydney and heading first west towards Perth, we made a detour from Mildura to catch the sunrise over Lake Tyrrell.
Stretching 51,500 acres, it is the largest salt lake in the state of Victoria. What makes this spot so special - especially at sunrise, and worth the early wake up call - is that the salt lake, covered in just a few cm of shallow water, glows pink under the sunlight.
We learned that the name Tyrrell means 'sky' in Wergaia, the language of the Boorong Aboriginal people, as they are known for their knowledge of the stars and the lake has one of the clearest views of the night sky in the state.
By car: The best way to get to Lake Tyrrell is with your own car. It is free to visit the lake and there is free parking. There are a number of different viewing platforms around the lake, but the main one is at the south end of the lake.
By public transport: Unfortunately, there is no public transport access to Lake Tyrrell.
By guided tour: I researched guided tour options for those of you without your own car. There weren't many, but there is a popular one running from the nearby town of Sea Lake. Sea Lake can be reached by public transport from Melbourne via Bendigo.

You can visit Lake Tyrrell for free; parking is also free on site.
The best time to visit Lake Tyrrell is at sunrise or sunset for those gorgeous pink glowy colours across the pink salt lake.
You can walk on the shallow salt lake - best to bring shoes you don't mind getting a bit salty or that can be easily washed!
