Ohhh, Ibiza, the party island, where young Europeans flock to discover the nightlife.
However, I'm not a drinker and while I do love a night of dancing, I'm not much of a party goer either. So, why Ibiza then? Well, in mid-April, when the sun is shining but it's not yet too hot and the spring flowers are in abundance, the island is a much quieter scene, with the summer party-goers yet to descend and instead a more mature and calmer crowd seeking a sun-drenched escape from the mainland inhabit the hotels and hostels.
Currently spending a few weeks working remotely from Valencia in southern Spain, taking a 35-minute Ryanair flight over to Ibiza for the Easter long weekend seemed like the perfect way to get away, have a proper holiday and plan to have no plans at all. If you've been reading my blog for a while or have followed along my adventures on YouTube and/or Instagram, you'll know that I travel pretty much nonstop. I never consider any of my traveling to be a "holiday" as such, as it's always go-go-go and how much can I possibly fit into my days.
But at the moment, with all that's been going on in my life, an authentic "holiday" was just what I was seeking, so that's how I've ended up in sunny Ibiza.
Where to Stay in Ibiza
There are accommodations to suit every budget and taste on Ibiza - from arty AirBnBs, to all inclusive resorts and mid-range hotels and my favourite of all when I travel: backpacker hostels. I stayed at the Giramundo Hostel steps from the ocean just outside the city of Ibiza, but only a twenty minute walk from the old town. The location was perfect, the hostel was clean and well-run, a small breakfast included, free wifi - the only downside was that I didn't find it to have a very social atmosphere as there was not really a central place to hang out which means most people tended hang out in their rooms and so I didn't meet anyone.
Best Things to Do on Ibiza
I didn't get the chance to visit the rest of the island (thanks to me not being able to drive, and the bus being on holiday schedules with the Easter break so not running when/where I wanted it to) so this guide is specifically for what to do in the city of Ibiza on the southern coast of the island of Ibiza. I would have loved to visit some of the beaches mentioned in this amazing guide.
1. Visit Platja de ses Figueretes
This is the closest beach to the city of Ibiza and while it sure isn't the island's prettiest, being close to the water and hearing the ocean under the swaying palm trees is pretty nice anyhow.
2. Wander the old town or Dalt Vila
The old town of Ibiza dates back to the Renaissance period and is home to quaint little streets, lots of open air cafes and bars, cute little souvenir shops and great views over the rest of the island.
3. Take in the views from Ibiza Castle or Castell d'Eivissa
This 13th century medieval castle at the top of the Dalt Vila has bastions, cannons and incredible views of the Balearic Sea to offer.
4. Go for a coastal wander at Punta des Calvari
I spotted this lush green coastal spot from the Ibiza Castle and then spent the afternoon picking my way along the rocky paths, spotting lizards and wildflowers and listening to the waves crash against the cliffs.
5. Watch the sunset over the beachfront from the rocks in front of Hotel THB Los Molinos
If you walk all the way to the left end of the beach when looking at the water, rocks adorn the front of the Hotel THB Los Molinos from where you can escape the crowds and watch a beautiful sunset looking back toward the beachfront.
6. Take a day trip to Formentera
No trip to Ibiza is complete without hopping on the ferry to the little island of Formentera, just thirty minutes south. Ferries make the crossing about 35 times per day so no need to book in advance, simply show up and buy your ticket on board.
