For my final adventure of the year, I landed in my 26th country (in my 26th year!) of Mauritius, a stunning paradise island off the coast of Africa, just a bit further east than Réunion.
One of the most famous spots on the island is the underwater waterfall in Le Morne, on the southwestern tip of the island. The underwater waterfall is an optical illusion where light blue shallow reef meets a dark blue deep underwater channel, giving the impression that the water is falling under the surface.
The best way to spot this incredible natural wonder is by plane, which was my Christmas present to myself this year. Lagoon Flight offers seaplane flights over the underwater waterfall providing exceptional views on a private flight over Le Morne and the surrounding region. Try to have the first flight of the day at 8:00am for that beautiful morning light over the island.
My pilot was brilliant, and she showed me all the beautiful spots where I could poke my camera out of the window and getting stunning shots. At one point as we flew over the waterfall, she even instructed me in how to fly the plane myself and for a few minutes, I was the one controlling it in the sky - it was a surreal experience and a phenomenal way to finish off my year.
After your flight, just a little way south of La Prairie Beach you'll find some beautiful private stretches of white sand to laze about in the sun with a book and swim in the warm Indian Ocean.
