We visited the Dolomites for the first time a month ago, spending four incredible days exploring the highlights of the region. You could spend weeks exploring in any season of the year and still not cover it all; we plan to come back again and again!
Given that I've been living just a few hours' drive away from the Dolomites for nearly four years, I can't believe it's took me that long to finally visit. However, to be honest, planning a trip to the Dolomites simply overwhelmed me. There is so much information out there and the region is huge, spanning across three of Italy's northern regions: Veneto, Trentino-South Tyrol and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

On our second day of that first trip, my SD card corrupted and I lost about 300 photos as we made our way from Misurina to Sassolungo via the famous Passo Giau. So, a month after our first visit, we headed back to the Dolomites to re-do the section where the photos were missing so we could re-capture them!
We decided quite spontaneously that we were having so much fun in the Dolomites that rather than just do a day trip to re-photograph the missing section, we wanted to stay the night and then spend an entire day in a wellness spa - one of our favourite ways to spend a day. After a bit of research on Booking.com, we found the wonderful Hotel Saltus and immediately booked a last-minute spa weekend.
By flight: There are a number of airports used to reach the Dolomites; the main one is in nearby Venice. Munich, Germany has the next major international airport, but there are also other smaller airports in Verona or in Innsbruck or Salzburg, both in Austria.
→ From any of these airports, you can rent a car to explore the Dolomites.
You can take a Flixbus directly from Venice airport to Cortina in the Dolomites in just over two hours.
By car: The best way to explore the Dolomites is with a car; either with your own wheels or with a rental. Parking is available at every attraction and this gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore on your own schedule, pulling over whenever and wherever you wish.
We drove down from where I currently live in Salzburg through the beautiful southern Austrian state of Tyrol. Visiting from further abroad? I highly recommend combining a trip to the Dolomites with time in Austria!
By bus: There is a great bus network servicing the Dolomites, perfect for if you don't have a car. You can get directly to Hotel Saltus on the 156 bus from Bolzano in under half an hour.

Driving above Bolzano

The Bolzano area is famous for having some of the world's best spa and wellness resorts; a quick look through Booking.com will show you!
We wanted something that was not outrageously expensive (many of them are) and also provided a serene and peaceful wellness experience. Hotel Saltus was perfect, combining everything we were looking for while also being the Dolomites' first eco resort:
In the midst of this enchanted world, our eco-hotel grows from the forest floor in a barely perceptible gradation of color. Rooms and suites nestle next to one another, with limestone floors and clay walls, porphyry stone from the excavation and beeswax sealing, making us forget all spatial limitations and embedding us in an illusion of true boundlessness. An illusion? Naturalness and aesthetics combine in a masterful composition 1,100 meters above sea level.
Roadtripping around the Dolomites? Make sure to make a stop in Bolzano for a night or two indulging at the Hotel Saltus!
