A Day at Attersee

The heat of summer is fully upon us and there is simply no better way to spend a hot summer's day in Austria than lakeside.

I returned from hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc, an intensely rewarding and mindblowing 165km trek through Italy, France and Switzerland, and was desperate for a few quieter, more relaxing summer days with friends.

And so, one of my best friends Ina and I drove out to Attersee, about 45 minutes away from Salzburg by car, depending on where around the lake you stop. Attersee is the largest lake in Salzkammergut, so there are plenty of lakeside options.

You can also take the S-Bahn (S2) from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Vöcklamarkt and then transfer to the train to Attersee, which goes directly to Attersee Bahnhof. This journey takes about one and a half hours.

Check out all my other favourite little Austrian spots here.

We had lunch first at the Mediterranean-inspired Das Attersee, a delicious restaurant situated right on the water's edge. Then, we spent the rest of the afternoon at the Freibadeplatz enjoying the sun and the water.
