In Squamish, you can stop on the side of the highway for a gorgeous little detour before tackling the iconic Chief. Popular with non-hikers, as the walking adds up to no more than 10 minutes, Shannon Falls is a breathtaking cascade of water gushing out of the mountain. There is a trail connecting the falls with the Chief trail head, so for those looking to hike that, this provides a nice start, and a less busy parking lot!
The chief is a well known hike in the Squamish area, that took Angela and I three hours round-trip, including prolonged lunch breaks on First and Second Peak, as well as numerous stops for photos – of course.
The hike is not super challenging, but is a lot of fun as it involves a number of ladders, chains and rock climbing that does require some level of upper body strength in order to pull yourself up. And, as if you need any more reason to go, the views are some of the best I’ve seen yet!
